Our beloved member Carol Schaffer Goldin z”l passed away on June 12, 2025 at the age of 70 (the photo above was taken in Nov. 2016 by Melvin Farris).
Because of the “Special Security Situation” that began very early the following morning, most people were unable to attend the funeral, which can be viewed below or here.

My dear friend Carol is finally at peace. She’s been released from all of the treatments and pain that she had to endure recently. It was so difficult to hear her in the past few days due to the suffering that overcame her. She was a fighter but this was a battle that she couldn’t win. I’m wrote this to help console myself and others on our loss.
I am writing this to remind myself of the wonderful friend and colleague Carol was. She was a caring and insightful teacher of English on my staff at the Academic English Department at the Open University of Israel. She taught even the most problematic students with a positive attitude. I knew I could count on her for help at any time.
But one of her finest acts was while she was teaching a mixed group of Arabs and Jews at Givat Havivah campus during the 2nd Lebanon War. She was so concerned with a student, whose reservist brother was killed; Carol organized a visit of the entire class to the shiva for this soldier.
She was generous and tried to contribute when she saw the need. So many times Carol contributed to projects at Hod Vehadar. My favorite is the banister she had installed at the steps leading up to the synagogue. I’m sure I will feel her presence every time I hold on to it as I descend those steps. And I can still see her smile of satisfaction when she saw it.
Her intellectual curiosity included many courses on various subjects but she was especially devoted to a set of courses on the history of Italian Jewry. She included me in a memorable tour of the Italian synagogue in Jerusalem and had a wonderful day.
We spent so much time together over the years. The day after my last move in February, she showed up and insisted on taking me to lunch. It was always a treat to spend time with her even if we just sat and chatted over breakfast. I will miss her very, very much.
יהי זכרה ברוך
May her memory be a blessing.

A message from Diane Friedgut, Coordinator, Masorti Women’s Study Days
I wanted to tell the kehilah that the Nat’l Masorti Women’s Study Day, held on zoom on Sunday, on June 22 was in memory of Carol Goldin (z”l). Carol was one of the founding members of our planning committee. Every year Carol and many others from Hod v’ Hadar held the registration table to welcome our many participants and set the tone for a warm day of learning and sharing. |
